This May, Im participating in the Workout to Conquer Cancer fundraiser and this cause is deeply personal to me.

In 2022, I was diagnosed with acral melanoma, a rare and lesser-known form of melanoma that isnt caused by sun exposure. It accounts for less than 5% of all melanoma cases and is often diagnosed later because its not as well understood. Thankfully, I was fortunate my cancer was caught before it spread. But through my diagnosis, I learned just how much progress has been made in recent years, and how critical continued research is.

In the last 5-10 years, thanks to advancements in immunotherapy, survival rates for advanced melanoma have improved dramatically. Treatments that didnt exist a decade ago are now saving lives giving people with late-stage melanoma real hope. And these breakthroughs arent just helping melanoma patients; theyre paving the way for new treatments for many other types of cancer as well.

Throughout May, Im committing to moving every single day for those still fighting, for survivors, and to help fund the research and care that saves lives. Im taking on this challenge to give back and to ensure that more people no matter how rare their diagnosis have access to effective treatments and better outcomes. Every dollar raised stays right here in B.C. and makes a profound impact by supporting life-saving cancer research and providing world-class care at BC Cancer.
