Anyone who knew my Dad will tell you how important health and fitness were throughout his life. After studying Phys Ed, he embarked on a career as a personal fitness trainer and manager of gyms and fitness clubs throughout the Sea to Sky corridor (while crafting an impressive body of work as a poet, writer, and editor). Through nearly 15,000 training sessions, he shared his passion for health and fitness with his clients, forming lifelong friendships along the way.

He combined this passion with his love of poetry in this piece, entitled, The Trainer:

Could it be more than sets?

More than reps, cardio intervals and floorwork?

Your eyes become trained to how a body moves,

where it's weak, where strong.

Some days it's so simple.

The two of you flow from place to place,

conversation easy between you,

each sharing a part of your lives.

Perhaps they'll come to know

the thing you don't tell,

that fitness is but a very small part

of a better life.

In the hours, weeks, years,

there's a glimpse of the heart.

In your time together, loved ones are born,

others lost.

There's a door that opens.

You are offered a chance

to make a difference in

someone's only life.

Step inside.

Dad also conquered marathons, triathlons, gran fondos, and mountains all over the globe, including summiting Kilimanjaro with my Mom to raise funds for eye care in the developing world.

After he was diagnosed with brain cancer, Dad had to put his love for fitness on the back burner. As the energy that he had available for exercise decreased, I found refuge in running, cycling, skiing, and various other sports, and I'm tremendously grateful that my father passed his passion along to my brother and me.

To honour my father's legacy in health and fitness, I will be working up a sweat every day in the month of May to raise funds for life-saving research and care at BC Cancer. I will move in honour of those who cannot, and in celebration of every survivor who has regained their strength.

So, as I get ready to embark on this challenge, please consider supporting my campaign, sharing this message with others, and even participating in the challenge yourself, if you're able.

Thank you for your support.
