Why I'm Doing the Workout to Conquer Cancer
May is Bladder Cancer Awareness Month so this years Workout to Conquer Cancer Challenge feels more personal than ever.
Eleven years ago, after a fun run, I noticed blood in my urine a small but alarming sign that led to an early diagnosis of bladder cancer, the fifth most common cancer. Since then, I've been closely monitored but have still experienced two recurrences. Early detection truly saves lives, so if you ever see red, please see your doctor.
In 2020, I lost several close friends to cancer. That year, I joined this challenge for the first time and it quickly became a meaningful tradition I now share with my kids and friends. This marks our sixth year participating. Each workout is done in memory of those we've lost and in support of those still fighting.
Recently I lost my cousin to colon cancer, and several friends continue their own battles. We can't bring our loved ones back, but we can honour them by showing up, staying strong, and standing together.
This challenge is about more than fitness. It's about supporting the 80,000 people in BC who face cancer each year.
If you're able, please consider donating or cheering me on. Every step counts and every bit of support makes a difference.
Together, we are stronger than cancer.
Thank you!
Sharon
